ABOUT US
The Schoolhouse for Special Needs Inc. (The Schoolhouse) is located in
the heart of St. Michael at “Britton Court”; approximately 5km (a 12-
minute drive) from the capital of Bridgetown.
The Schoolhouse started in January 2006 with a modest group of three
students. We received the local governmental regulatory department’s
endorsement on September 2 nd, 2008.
The Schoolhouse’s Mission is to educate, motivate, inspire and enrich
the lives of children and young adults with special needs. In order to
help our students develop a stronger sense of self, we participate in
practical, creative, and intellectual stimulation. This lays the
groundwork for lifelong learning as well as a personally fulfilling and
fruitful existence. Because of how small and personal our class sizes
are, we can interact with each student more directly.
Barbados and the rest of the world’s educational landscape have
undergone and are still undergoing significant transformation. Teachers
are being pushed to come up with innovative ideas about how to give
every student a top-notch education. Despite the individuality of each of
our students, we are also constantly put to the test to ensure that we are
able to adapt to the changing nature of education and help each of our
students find their place in the adult world. However, we will always
put the needs of the individual student first, stressing social inclusion,
emotional health, and fundamental/functional academics. In the end, we
prioritize tailored and relevant learning experiences.
The Schoolhouse offers comprehensive social interaction activities that
make the most of our island’s many wonderful recreational and natural
features, from water sports to equine therapy. Along with a range of
specials, such as Rhythm & Movement, Martial Arts, Visual Arts,
Gardening and other community-based learning initiatives, we continue
to work on an integrated and adjusted academic curriculum.
