The Schoolhouse’s teachers are all highly qualified, dedicated and caring individuals who make our daily experiences a true pleasure. Without each of their unique qualities, The Schoolhouse would not be what has become today.
Yasmin Vlahakis
Yasmin Vlahakis was educated at St. Gabriel’s School in Barbados and The Chiltern Nursery Training College in Reading-England where she acquired her N.N.E.B. Yasmin lived in Zimbabwe, Africa and started her teaching career at St. Giles Medical Rehabilitation Centre. This employment opened her love and appreciation for children with special needs. Upon her return to Barbados, she established Little People Preschool and later joined the staff at St. Angela’s School to oversee their primary school special needs program. After ten successful years there she branched out on her own with The Schoolhouse. Yasmin is the mother of two daughters and the grandmother of one granddaughter and four grandsons.
Kathryn Dottin-Holliman
Kathryn Dottin-Holliman joined The Schoolhouse in 2012 as the Remote Accounts Administrator and also serves as a Consultant to the Board. Kathryn was educated at Girls’ Foundation School-Barbados; Wingate High School, State University at Albany and Brooklyn College-U.S.A. She has over thirty years’ of experience in private school Administrative Management and was an educator of English Language & Literature, History and Social Studies. With these years of administration and teaching, combined with her corporate background, U.S.A. and locally; in banking, tourism, sales and the media; she brings a wealth of valuable experience to the Schoolhouse. Kathryn enjoys reading, action movies, board games and cooking. She is the proud mother of one son and a granddaughter, both residing in Rhode Island, U.S.A.
Tschika Fung
Tschika Fung officially joined our team in September 2024, following a successful term as an understudy to one of our experienced educators. She now serves as the lead teacher for the Shak-Shak class, where she focuses on delivering an educational experience that combines foundational academics with a deeper emphasis on essential life skills, self-care, and home management. Tschika has a genuine passion for caregiving, particularly for the elderly, and brings that same compassion, patience, and understanding into her classroom. Her ability to connect with students, particularly those with unique learning needs, is rooted in her commitment to fostering independence and practical skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Tschika’s thoughtful and nurturing approach creates an inclusive learning environment where students feel supported, valued, and empowered to achieve personal growth.
Radigria Babb
Radigria Babb came to The Schoolhouse in September 2019. She is a graduate of the Barbados Community College and Erdiston Teacher’s Training College with a background in Theatre Arts. She is the Class Teacher for Cassia. Radigria brings knowledge of early childhood education having worked in the St. Angela’s Infants Department of the Ursuline Schools for some years. Radigria is passionate about her students and is enthusiastic about creating happy learning spaces where her students can thrive and be creative.
Makeba Watson
Makeba Watson started with The Schoolhouse in October 2021 and is the Class Teacher for Sandbox-Kindergarten. Makeba completed studies in Early Childhood Education and Classroom Management at Erdiston Teachers’ Training College and Childcare and Nursery Management at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology. She has worked in Preschool and Kindergarten for over twenty-four years. Makeba is a mother of two children and enjoys sewing, crafts and DIY projects. She believes that teachers are world changers whose influence and contribution to education transcends beyond their time in the classroom. She firmly thinks that teachers have the power to inspire and change the lives of their students; it’s not a call to be taken lightly.
Alecia Scott
Alecia Scott is the Class Aide for Sandbox-Kindergarten and joined us in Hilary 2023. With a foundational education and a deep-seated dedication to nurturing young minds, Alecia brings an unparalleled passion for supporting children. Alecia might not boast an extensive work history, but what Alecia lacks in formal experience, she more than compensates for with an unwavering devotion to our students’ well-being. Her innate ability to connect with children and create a warm, supportive environment is invaluable. Alecia plays a pivotal role in ensuring that every child receives the attention and support they need. Her genuine compassion and patience create an environment where all students feel valued. Alecia’s commitment to our mission of fostering an inclusive learning environment embodies the core values of The Schoolhouse.
Rachael Kennedy
Rachael Kennedy is one of our newest team members having joined our team in Trinity 2023 as an Understudy for the Art Studio. She took up full reins for this group in September 2023. Rachael Kennedy joined our team in Trinity 2023 as an Art Studio Understudy and assumed full responsibility for the group in September 2023. She earned an Associate Degree in Fine Art and a Bachelor of Graphic Design with First Class Honors from BCC. Following college, Rachael tenured at reputable agencies Acute Vision Inc. and G&A Communications. With several years as Senior Designer & two Addy Awards, she moved on as Senior Designer for Remy Cointreau-Mount Gay Distilleries. In 2022, Rachael decided to pursue her lifelong passion for teaching art and becoming a fine artist. She has volunteered at a local primary school, where she established the framework for her ‘Learning Through Art’ creative curriculum. Rachael is enthusiastic about teaching and believes that “staying open to new experiences and learning keeps life creative and exciting.”
Samantha Simpson
Samantha Simpson became a member of The Schoolhouse team in September 2022 and is the Class Teacher of the Frangipani group. Samantha grew up in Barbados and attended St. Winifred’s School for twelve years through its primary and secondary schools. She continued her studies at the Barbados Community College in the Business and Marketing department. She is currently in the process of obtaining her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. Samantha has worked with children for over seven years in various capacities including nannying and tutoring for both the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination and the Caribbean Examinations Council exams for English Language, English Literature and Social Studies. She also tutors Reading and Language Arts to Dyslexic students. Samantha is very passionate about horses and loves the ocean. She is receptive to learning new skills, always smiling and eager to help others. She is best described as an optimist and endeavours to be a positive role model for her students; showing them that they can do whatever they put their minds to.
Juanita Clarke
Juanita Clarke is the 2019 People’s Choice Award-winning Musician Of The Year and Barbados’/ the Eastern Caribbean’s first representative at the international One Beat Fellowship program. She is affectionately known as ‘Juanz’, an energetic, versatile, and unique Barbadian session drummer and percussionist. Her love of music was sparked at the age of eleven and now she performs extensively throughout Barbados with various local and international artists; moving easily between all genres. With a strong belief in learning and sharing while creating memorable experiences, Juanz was led to an Associate Degree in Music with Distinction from the Barbados Community College to teach drums and percussion to the next generation of musicians and musicians-at-heart through private lessons. She also uses her gift to provide music therapy for adults and children with special needs at The Schoolhouse when she joined us in September 2017. A mantra of Always Forward, believing in positive energy, and love for music and rhythm while being an inspiration to all, add to the driving forces behind this exceptional musician. Juanz endeavours to continuously defy the odds on such a male-dominated instrument, travel the world performing and indulging in cultures while sharing and gaining more knowledge on her musical journey.
Aaron Layne
Meet Aaron Layne, the maestro behind our piano program at The Schoolhouse. He joined us in September 2019 and brought a wealth of experience and a passion for nurturing musical talent, he brings unparalleled expertise to our students’ musical journeys. A certified music virtuoso, Aaron boasts an impressive repertoire of qualifications and credentials. He holds official certification in music education with an Associate Degree in Applied Arts, backed by years of dedicated practice. His commitment to mastering the art of music shines through in every lesson he imparts. Among Aaron’s many talents, his expertise with the piano stands out. His ability to instil both technical proficiency and a deep appreciation for the piano is unparalleled. As a part-time music teacher, Aaron enriches our program with his passion, knowledge, and dedication. He plays a crucial role in shaping the musical aspirations of our students, instilling confidence and a deep understanding of the art form.
Henderson Turton
Henderson joined The Schoolhouse in September 2023 as an Instructor and Coach for the Taekwondo program. Bringing with him a 4th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and recognition as a Certified Master, he boasts extensive experience in the field. Henderson’s involvement in Taekwondo in Barbados dates back to 1999, where he has served in various capacities including athlete, coach, and administrator, holding esteemed positions such as Treasurer and President for the Taekwondo Association of Barbados. His noteworthy contributions have been acknowledged with the Award for International Excellence from the Barbados Olympic Association in 2023. Internationally, Henderson actively participates, serving on committees and as a Certified World Taekwondo Level Two International Coach. Notably, he is a Gold Level recipient of the International Award for Young People – also referred to as the Duke of Edinburgh Award – presented to him in 2011 by His Royal Highness Prince Edward – Earl of Wessex. In addition to his Taekwondo achievements, Henderson is a Chartered Accountant with over 17 years of experience, holding a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of the West Indies. Henderson’s unwavering passion for sports coupled with his dedication to excellence make him an invaluable asset to The Schoolhouse team.
Courtenay Thorne
Courtenay, a versatile dancer, choreographer, and collaborator, joined our team in September 2023. Her passion for the performing arts blossomed from a young age, leading her to train extensively in dance, acting, and singing. After leaving Barbados at 16, she pursued international dance and performance training in the United States. Courtenay earned her BSc in Dance (Performance & Choreography) from Skidmore College, New York, in 2012. She later obtained her Diploma in Dance Studies from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (London, England) in 2016. Throughout her career, Courtenay has taught at various institutions across the Caribbean and the United States, including the University of the West Indies and Barbados Community College. Currently serving as the Artistic Director for the Barbados Dance Project, Courtenay holds an MFA from Florida State University’s School of Dance. Her diverse experiences include collaborating with artists worldwide and coordinating the Urban Bush Women’s Summer Leadership Institute. Passionate about artistry and teaching, Courtenay continues to explore her craft while rediscovering her roots in Barbados.
Neal Aymes
Neal Aymes brings a wealth of experience to our school community as the dedicated driver of our shuttle service. With a strong background in commercial vehicles and years of expertise, Neal has honed his skills in transportation, ensuring a safe and comfortable ride for our students. Having lived and worked in both Barbados and Canada, Neal brings a diverse perspective and a rich understanding of different cultures to his role. His multicultural experience enables him to connect with students from various backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment. Neal is not just a skilled driver; he embodies the values of courtesy, kindness, and professionalism. Students and staff alike rely on Neal not only for transportation but also for his friendly demeanour and willingness to go above and beyond to assist others.
Verdon Agard
Verdon, our invaluable team member, joined us in January 2023 as our dedicated Handyman/Custodian. With a wealth of experience under his belt, Verdon brings a versatile skill set to our school community. From tackling maintenance and repair tasks of all kinds to tending to our gardens with care and expertise, Verdon ensures that our facilities are always in top-notch condition. Verdon is more than just a skilled handyman; he embodies qualities that make him a joy to work with. Pleasant, friendly, and always ready to lend a helping hand, Verdon is an asset to our team and an integral part of our school’s warm and welcoming atmosphere. Whether it’s fixing a leaky faucet, mowing the lawn, or simply offering a kind word, Verdon’s positive attitude and can-do spirit make him an invaluable member of our community.
Neysa Lynch
Neysa Lynch joined our team in September 2024 as the lead teacher for our new Infants class, Ylang-Ylang. She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise, holding a Master of Science in Educational Psychology from George Mason University, alongside qualifications from Fanshawe College, The University of the West Indies, and Barbados Community College. With over five years of experience in early childhood education, Neysa is a qualified educator specializing in educational assessment. Her passion for nurturing children’s development is reflected in her commitment to creating an inclusive, stimulating learning environment that encourages creativity, curiosity, and independence.
Sandra Broome
Sandra Broome joined our team as a Volunteer Reading Specialist in September 2022, bringing with her a wealth of experience from her distinguished career in education. Having spent the majority of her professional life teaching at a renowned private school, Sandra is now retired but remains passionate about supporting student development. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education from New Zealand. Sandra’s calm yet effective teaching approach allows her to connect with her students, assess their reading abilities, and foster significant improvement. Her dedication to their growth is evident in each session, as she tailors her strategies to meet individual needs. In addition to her expertise, Sandra is an enthusiastic team player. She is always willing to support school activities, embrace new learning opportunities, and contribute wherever needed.
